The unchangeable deterioration of steel due to various environmental factors such as acid, moisture, etc. is called corrosion. TIPS TO PREVENT CORROSION IN TMT BARS

Corrosion cannot be and should not be taken lightly. The entire building structure’s strength depends upon the TMT Bars or TMT Rebar and RCC. Preventive measures that should be taken to avoid corrosion of steel TMT Bar. 

1. Avoid heavy reinforcement at the intersection of beams and columns.

3. Keep the Steel Bars in a dry place so that it does not get exposed to rain, snow, salt elements, etc.
4. It is highly recommended to clean the TMT bars to clean with wire-brush before placing:

Electroplating – Cover the surface of TMT Rebar with a thin layer of Nickeletallic plating.
Mechanical Plating – In the Steel bar surface, zinc or cadmium can be applied to prevent corrosion.
Steel TMT Rebar can be dipped into molten zinc and the process is known as Hot Dipping.

6. Using the correct ratio of water-cement is essential.

Anti-Corrosion Treatment

It is essential to run the alkaline solution in TMT Rebar for the areas that have high moisture content in the air like coastal areas. A certain number of steps need to be taken for Anti-Corrosion Treatment.

Step 1 
Reinforced bars are submerged in the de-rusting solution for almost half an hour until the crust is removed and the bright surface of the bar is seen.

The de-rusting solution is prepared by mixing:

1. 50 liters of hydrochloric acid.
2. 50 liters of water.
3. 5 liters of inhibitor.

After this, the TMT bars should be taken out of the solution and cleaned using a wet cloth.

Step 2 
The bars are again dipped into the Alkaline Solution. An alkaline solution is prepared by:

1. 1 kg of Alkaline Powder.
2. 400 liters of water.

The bars should be kept in the solution for 5 minutes and then to taken out and cleaned properly. 

Step 3 
After the Alkaline Treatment, Phosphate Jelly needs to be applied with the help of a fiber brush. The jelly will take around an hour to react with the bar and after that the bars can be cleaned properly.

Step 4 
In the next step Corrosion Inhibitor Solution to be applied to the bars with the help of a fiber brush/dipping.
Corrosion Inhibitor Solution is made with:

1. 500 CC of inhibitor.
2. 1 kg of Ordinary Portland Cement.

This semi-liquid mixture is applied to the surface of the rod with the help of a fiber brush. The mixture should be applied on the same day it is prepared and should be allowed to dry for a day.

Step 5 
Finally, the Corrosion Sealing Solution needs to be applied to the surface of the rod. It approximately takes about 4-5 hours to dry on air completely. Once it is dried completely it needs to be repeated once again.
